A cement carrier that cannot discharge itself is dependent on whatever equipment happens to be waiting at the receiving port. If the berth has no unloader, the vessel waits; if the unloader is slow, the vessel waits longer, and demurrage runs the whole time. Converting a standard dry bulk carrier into a pneumatic self-discharging vessel removes that dependency: the ship arrives carrying its own discharge capability and can work berths that have no shore installation at all. The retrofit carried out at Tuzla fitted permanently mounted pneumatic conveying equipment into an existing bulk carrier, so cement moves from the holds into a sealed line and ashore without an open transfer at any point. Dust stays inside the system, the cargo stays dry, and the discharge rate no longer depends on what the port can provide.
