Polygonal Silo | Rudus Oy, Finland

This polygonal silo was delivered to Rudus Oy in Porvoo, Finland in 2015. Porvoo sits on the Finnish coast east of Helsinki, and a terminal built there has to hold cement through a winter that runs for months. The polygonal silo is a bolted steel stock terminal: flat panel sections manufactured and coated in the factory, shipped in containers and assembled on site. The polygonal form uses less steel for the same volume than a cylindrical shell of equivalent capacity, and because the panels bolt rather than weld, the erection work on the customer’s ground is short and does not depend on site welding conditions. Ten years on, the terminal is still in service. That is the useful part of this reference: a bolted silo is not a temporary structure, and the Nordic climate has not been the limiting factor anyone expected it to be.
